Listening to the podcast right now. Ya'll just had to hit my one pet peeve talking about the GI Joe movie.

That being that we should expect it to be a "mindless popcorn flick" I realise that's aparently been the winning formula for Transformers (Not for me, but for general public)
My question would be, Why should we expect them not to have a good story? Sure they may change characters and the story may be nothing like we have ever seen before, but that doesn't mean it needs to be a mindless movie with a bunch of explosions. It can still have a good story.
That's my only issue (It's a festering issue that's become more infected over time

) Good show overall! (I say that with 30 minutes still left, my opinion could still change

Well, for the sequel, I think we should expect "mindless popcorn" because that's what we got with the original. And in my opinion, "mindless popcorn" does not mean it doesn't have a good story. You can have a good story and have a film still be a popcorn action flick.
I think the first Iron Man movie is pretty popcorn. It's a great, fun, action-packed movie, but still a popcorn action flick. I apologize if the term "mindless popcorn" indicates negativity, I don't necessarily equate it with that. I've seen hundreds of movies I would categorize as mindless popcorn that still had a great story that was interesting. Taking this summer...I think Thor was a total popcorn movie, but enjoyable as hell with a good story. I just didn't have to think real hard while watching it.
I just think folks expecting really serious undertones or dramatic irony, or emphatic political statements on current events shouldn't get their hopes up. Hasbro isn't going to use one of their flagship brands as a social commentary device or an artistic measure. They're trying to make a film to appeal to as many people as possible, and when it comes to summer films, unfortunately that generally means popcorn.
